Suicide Continues on the Rise in Our Society

Vijai P. Sharma, Ph.D

In the most prosperous nation on this earth, America, five million of its inhabitants at some time in their lives attempt suicide.  More than two hundred thousand people will attempt suicide this year alone and twenty-six thousand of them will succeed   About every twenty minutes someone in the United States commits suicide.   My recent study of suicide in U.S., hit me with two painful facts:  one, the largest number of suicidal attempts are made by people who are in their "prime of life," specifically, between 24 and 44; second, suicide is rising most rapidly for the ones in the "prime of their youth," specifically, between, 15 to 24.  Among 15 to 24 years of age, suicide ranks the third highest cause of death, the first two being accidents and homicide.

To the above ironies of suicide, add another one, the pills.  We think of pills as pain-killers, health restorers and life savers, but sometimes we use pills to carry an assault on our own life.  More than half of those who attempt suicide, do so by ingesting pills.  What do others do who don't take pills?  About one-third of them cut themselves, and the remainder -- mostly males -- use other and more deadly methods, such as hanging, gunshot, or jumping from high places.

Incidence of suicide is rising much more rapidly in women and younger population.  Among women, the rate of successful suicide used to be one third of that in men, but the gap has begun to narrow.  Women have always made more suicide attempts than men, but their attempts were not nearly as lethal.  While women tend to use barbiturates (sedatives) as means to attempt or commit suicide; men tend to use gunshot.  Unfortunately, now women are becoming more effective in taking their lives.  But the greatest increase in suicide has been among the 15 to 24 year old.  Youngsters, today, commit suicide three times more often than they did in 1950s.

Is suicide primarily related to failure, incompetence, lack of education and poverty?  Not really.  For instance, suicide rate is pretty high in college students and members of certain professions.  Compared to the average population, college students are arguably more intelligent and educated.  Over ten thousand college students in our country attempt suicide each year and about ten percent of them succeed.  Among these college students, more students from universities attempt or commit suicide than do the ones from community colleges and small liberal arts colleges.  In the professional groups, physicians, dentists, lawyers, and psychologists are at a higher risk than members of other professions.  Perhaps suicide is related more to our expectations from ourselves and others, our self-image, and internal and external stresses rather than actual lack of competence.

High degree of stress, depressed and angry feelings, relationship crises, drug abuse, failure and consequent self-devaluation, inner conflicts, and the loss of meaning and purpose of life, can all produce a mental state that looks to suicide as a possible way out.  College students face tremendous stress in coping with the academic demands and trying to fit in the society and with peers.  Looming on the horizon for them are the challenges of career choices and the conflict between what their basic values are and what their life- situations demand of them.

Suicide, often stems from loneliness and isolation.  What is the common trait or link between the depressed, elderly, alcoholics, mentally ill, separated or divorced people, individuals living alone, migrants, and people from socially disorganized areas?  The common element among them is the high risk of suicide.  They all experience loneliness and isolation, albeit for different reasons.

The link between suicide and depression is a strong one and needs to be mentioned separately.  The risk of suicide is about 1 percent during the year in which a depressive episode occurs.  However, for people who have recurrent episodes of depression, their risk for committing suicide rises to 15 percent.  Treatment of depression can sometimes be life saving.  Contrary to popular opinion, depression is not a sign of weakness, and receiving treatment for depression is a sign of wisdom rather than of craziness or personal failure.

Generally, people who are integrated with their families and friends can successfully cope with the suffering and pain of depression without getting actively suicidal.  Sure, they occasionally entertain a death wish or suicidal thoughts such as, "Wouldn't it be better for everyone if I was gone or had taken something to sleep and never got up?," but, they can usually shrug these ideas and go on.

This should not be taken to mean that if a person commits suicide, his or her family had abandoned or participated in some way in his or her isolation.  Neither outsiders not the survivors should jump to such a conclusion.  Sometimes, individuals kill themselves to save embarrassment or further trouble to their family.  We should, however, recognize the importance of support and open communication when either we or our loved ones are coping with a crisis or a long-term serious problem.

A sociologist once said that a person who commits suicide places the skeleton in the cupboard of his or her family and friends.  Survivors not only have to deal with their loss but also about how others view them.  Suicide survivors need the support of others who have faced the same situation.  Doctors, nurses, and counselors need to be constantly  vigilant of signs of stress and irrational guilt among suicide survivors.

A response I posted regarding the embracing and promoting of the cultural Marxist agenda:

Heather, the fact that you are using the term "out her" means you have bought into the cultural Marxist rhetoric and propaganda.

It seems pretty clear that you believe that it is perfectly normal and sane to not identify as who you physically are and
to want the whole world to believe and promote the new lie you want to live. This is madness on the societal level.

There is a fifty year old man who was married with children who divorced his wife and left his children so that he could live as what he "identified" as (a 12 year old girl licking lollipops and wearing frilly dresses). He wants everyone to accept him as a her and treat him like a little girl. Would you embrace and promote that madness too or encourage him to get some psychological help?

Gender Dysphoria used to be well known and then treated, and now Marxist governments, and the "useful idiots" Karl Marx spoke about that would be used to push the communist manifesto, want schools and citizens to promote mental disorders as normal and to keep people in their instability, rather than lovingly desire their freedom from their mental disassociative illness.

Love people enough to want them set free from their mental instabilities and illnesses, don't promote it as normal, rational, and an acceptable "norm".

Now politicians and leftist educators want to confuse children into questioning whether or not they are the gender they physically are so that they can promote more of the same family dismantling and state empowering rhetoric and resulting legislation changes.

People need to stop drinking the kool-aid, wake up from their stupor and loudly cry out loud, "the emperor has no clothes!" Hopefully then those who have been blinded by group think and group speak will wake up and go, "oh my, we were deceived into believing and saying that the emperor was wearing fine invisible robes but in fact the child said, what all of us should have clearly seen, that he was naked all along".

Did you know that there are also people who believe that they should have been born disabled yet they are able bodied and that they want people to embrace the diversity of their mentality as well.

They want taxpayers to pay for and the medical system
to provide them medical remedies to align their physical bodies to their mental "identities", as disabled people. (Body integrity identity disorder)

Will you embrace that mental "diversity" as well? Or will you simply "discriminate" and say, "no, it's okay to remove a healthy and functional penis when someone disassociates from theirs but not arms or legs"?

My goodness, when will people love people again, rather than embracing and promoting disorders for the selfish motive of feeling morally superior to those who call a spade a spade?

This guy (Eggin) is engaged in despotism. He demonstrates the communism of the government he works for. These are cultural Marxist tactics. People who like the decoupling of children from their parents and marrying them to the state are either Marxists or the useful idiots Karl Marx was referring to that would help the Marxists take over.

The state has no business keeping facts of major importance about one's own children hidden from parents. It is subversive and if you don't know how it is marxist then you need to learn the history of the Marxist movement and learn the goals of cultural Marxism.

Some of the goals involve undermining and dividing the family, getting children to distrust parents and to place their trust and elegance with the state, etc. Recently the NDP in one of their sexual manifestos that they sent out to all Alberta schools encouraged teachers to get students to, instead of referring to boys and girls, refer to each other as comrads.

The evidence is very clear that the NDP is Canada's renamed and rebranded Marxist party and many are being duped by nicey nicey language into submitting to and endorsing cultural Marxism.

Heather, you need to learn about suicide. Suicide isn't helped by removing structure, guidance and solidity.

Teen Suicide rates have escalated because youth have an exceedingly high level of uncertainty and see the massive instability in the world. T
hey don't have hope. They have been taught that all they are is evolved pond scum without a purpose (other than whatever purpose they can manufacture), the Bible makes it very clear that people perish without knowledge of God and without a vision for the future.

Making it easier to be deluded and removing all boundaries and expectations, not to mention guidelines for righteous relationships doesn't create more hope and certainty, it causes more despair and creates a less solid environment for everyone, not just the people being told that it's okay to believe and do whatever thing comes into their mind.

Actually, if you do the research, in the most permissive societies in the world where alternative lifestyles are in no way shunned the suicide rates are essentially the same.

Our society's moral decline due to our departure from God is to blame for record high suicide rates, not the lack of tolerance. In fact, as our society has become more permissive, suicide rates have increased (not decreased).

Here are some points to consider as cited by Vijai P. Sharma, Ph.D - "Youngsters, today, commit suicide three times more often than they did in 1950s.

Is suicide primarily related to failure, incompetence, lack of education and poverty? Not really. For instance, suicide rate is pretty high in college students and members of certain professions. College students face tremendous stress in coping with the academic demands and trying to fit in the society and with peers. Looming on the horizon for them are the challenges of career choices and the conflict between what their basic values are and what their life- situations demand of them."

"The link between suicide and depression is a strong one..."

So, as we see above there is a certain link between suicide and the loss of meaning and purpose (which our ministry of education has systematically dismantled with it's humanistic God hating teachings). See

A very sad and somber (and timely) message. I read every word of the reference material and commentary posts.

I know a guy in UK who recently made an attempt. I pray that he will be able to receive my message.
